Children with Special Needs and Discovery Toys.

Fact Sheet

One in every 150 children in the U.S. has autism or a closely related disorder. Discovery Toys has a goal to deliver a rich educational experience to each child, including those with special challenges. In fact, an inhouse survey shows 30% of Discovery Toys Educational consultants have Special Needs training.

Our learning toys, featured in our seasonal catalogs, are designed for every child. In the Catalog, we include an Autism development chart for each of our toys that addresses six general areas of Autism learning and are labeled with these letter designations:

Toys to develop independent play with some limited instruction.
Toys that promote sustained engagement.
Toys that build skills for cooperative play.
Toys that create opportunities for children to talk about their play experience.
Toys with obvious completion criteria.
Toys that encourage pretend play.

To help parents and children further, the company classifies their toys by Learning Styles.

Aligned with their Multiple Layers of Learning concept—that each and every toy represents many layers of learning inherent in the product-- Learning Styles identifies senses engaged when children interact with a particular toy. These classic Learning Styles are designated as:

A - Auditory (Sound)
K - Kinesthetic (Touch & Movement)
V - Visual (Sight)
