Engaging the child with autism in play with any DISCOVERY TOYS® product provides fuel for communication. That’s why we encourage parents to play with their children; it simply multiplies the learning possibilities and builds communication and relationships. Verbalizing the play experience is a vital step in the learning process that actively supports skill development and academic and social progress. It is important that you understand and make use of open-ended questions to foster conversation. Closed questions that invite a yes/no answer like, "Did the ball pop out?" can throttle a conversation and cut it short. A simple understanding of how to encourage a conversation with an open question starting with, "who, what, where, when, why or how" such as, "What happened to the green ball when you let it go at the top?" can actually start a productive conversation.
